What things cost, and what to check before you agree a price. No sales pitch — if we do not have a figure, we say so rather than guess.
Before you agree a price
- Get more than one quote for the same job — it gives you something real to compare a price against.
- Ask for the quote in writing: what is included, what is excluded, and roughly how long the job will take.
- A deposit over about a quarter of the job total is unusual for domestic work. Ask why it is needed before you agree to it.
- If the job is gas work, check the tradesperson's Gas Safe registration before they start. It is a legal requirement, not just good practice.
