How it works

Two sides, one job. Here is what happens on each.

If you need work doing

Describe the job, add a postcode, and add photos if you have them. We match it to trades who work in that trade and cover your area. Up to three of them can take your job, so you get real quotes to compare without being buried in calls. Your job stays open for a month.

If you are a tradesperson

Tell us your trade, where you work and how far you travel, and you can start looking at jobs straight away. We check company details afterwards and get in touch if we have questions. Gas work needs a Gas Safe registration we have checked against the register. We do not verify identity documents. You pay only for the jobs you take, and no more than three trades can take the same job.

We never hold your money

You pay the tradesperson directly, always. GoodTrades is not a bank, an escrow service or an insurer, and we will never ask you to pay us for work. What we do instead is show you, on every profile, whether that trade takes a deposit and how much, and whether they work to a written contract — and let you filter on it. Never pay a deposit by bank transfer to a new account without a contract naming the company, the work and the dates.

What the trades get, and when

The moment a tradesperson pays to take your job, they get your phone number and email address. There is no step where you approve them first, so expect to hear from someone you have not spoken to before. At most three can take your job, so at most three will contact you, and nobody else gets your details at all.

About reviews

Only a homeowner who posted the job here can review the trade who did it. That makes our reviews thinner than an open review site, and far harder to fake.
