These are pre-launch terms, written by GoodTrades’ operator and not yet reviewed by a solicitor. Where something below is a gap rather than a decision, it says so.
These terms cover you using GoodTrades to find a tradesperson. Using the site, or posting a job, means you accept them.
What GoodTrades is
GoodTrades introduces you to tradespeople who want to quote for your job. We are not a party to whatever you agree with a tradesperson, we do not supervise the work, and we do not guarantee it. The contract for the work is between you and them — not between us and them, and not between us and you.
Posting a job
Posting a job is free, and you are never obliged to accept a quote, or to accept any at all. Up to 3 tradespeople can take your job. Describe it honestly — it is what they price the work from.
What happens when a trade takes your job
The moment a tradesperson pays to take your job, we give them your name, phone number, email address, postcode and description — immediately, with no approval step from you. Expect a call or a message from someone you have not spoken to before. Our privacy notice sets out exactly who sees your details and when.
We never hold your money
You pay the tradesperson directly, always. GoodTrades is not a bank, an escrow service or an insurer, and we will never ask you to pay us for work. What we do instead is show you, on every profile, whether that trade takes a deposit, how much, and whether they work to a written contract.
- A deposit over about a quarter of the job is unusual. Ask why.
- Never pay a deposit by bank transfer to a new account without a written contract naming the company, the work and the dates.
What we check before a trade can join, and what we do not
Signing up is open. A business can join, list a profile and buy a job the same day, without anyone at GoodTrades approving them first. We look at company details afterwards and get in touch if something does not add up, and we can suspend an account at any time. We do not run background checks, we do not verify identity documents, and no profile here claims we have.
One thing is checked rather than taken on trust: gas work. A trade cannot buy a gas job without a Gas Safe registration we have confirmed, because trading gas work without one is against the law, not just against our rules. We do not currently run an equivalent check for any other trade, and we do not verify identity documents at sign-up.
Reviews
Only someone who posted a job here, whose trade took it, can review that trade — we check this against our own records rather than trust the review form. We do not remove a review for being unflattering. A trade can reply once, publicly, under the review.
If something goes wrong
Tell us. We cannot do the work for a trade or refund money you paid them, because that payment never passed through us — but we can, and do, take a trade off GoodTrades. See our Help page and the Emergency page first, or email us about a specific job.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the site changes. Check the date at the top; we will not backdate a change that affects you.
